samm bennett: some very new songs
back around

more than a stone's throw
less than a light year
you were already half long gone
i was standing right about here
now you've come back around
but a chasm has opened in the earth
our old favorite place was swallowed up
i don't know what anything is worth

i wrote you a letter on a leaf blowing in the wind
you took your hammer & chisel and carved a reply in stone
you took a bass drum mallet to a pile of violins
while i played pizzicato on the slide trombone
you put the script in the shredder and the poet in his grave
even the silver toungued devil's at a loss for words
and i'm trying to keep my eye on a single pair of wings
in the swirling center of a flock of birds

i took the phone to the 13th floor and tried to call in sick
but a voice on the line said the boss was dead
later i was told of his dying words
it seems he whispered your name
as he lay on his death bed
now i look over my shoulder while i'm bouncing off the walls
sleeping on the ceiling and falling up the stairs
at all the places where our paths used to cross
they've put up signs saying closed for repairs

i've shivered & sweated & cried in the midnight hour
seen the sun rise lonely
seen it go down lonely too
i used to pray to forget you then pray for your return
and here we're face to face i can't tell who from who
and now i see you're gettin that far away look in your teeth
but you can put away yer maps and yer travellers guide
there's nowhere left to go if we gotta go from here
so let's just stay put and wait around for the next landslide
tingle tangle mingle mangle

s
lice up the lizard at midnight
put it up under your bed
give me some room to maneuver
make gestures in your head
pull off the honeybee's wings
glue them to the edge of town
mash up the crickets and the lemongrass
bring another bottle down

tingle tangle mingle mangle

the wolverine is ticklish
so keep your fingers on the badger's tail
there's a card game going in the back room
you could win yourself a bucket of snails
put the caterpillar back on the abacus
take the monkey off the astrolabe
here's a bone from the tombs
of the cappuchin monks
throw it in the river babe

tingle tangle mingle mangle

i'll chew another leaf with the bullfrog
while you think of something clever to say
the raccoon's got a good mantra
but the mosquito's gonna carry the day
your butterfly might look pretty
but you know you can't have no fun with it
and there's a red ant stuck in the hourglass
so let's sever the snake and be done with it

tingle tangle mingle mangle
somewhere between

we'll play our cards close to the bone
we'll skip the light fandango
even if we don't know what it means
with every step we take
we'll draw a new line in the sand
and as lightning strikes the same place twice
we'll roll away the stone

there's a simple truth
that's mostly eluded us babe
we spent too many years looking up
when we should've been looking through
there's a time and place for everything
except the things there's no time or place for
so let's draw the bow across the string
and let the neighbors know it's time to celebrate

the people were primed
and the conditions were ripe for revolution
but then an awkward silence descended
on every dinner party in the world
everybody went home and cast the same old vote
as well as the first stone
so the men on the hill could get back to the business
of manufacturing the enemy

when all is said and done
there's still gonna be plenty to do and say
we'll let the chips fall where we want
just exactly where we want them to
we'll arrive somewhere between total enlightenment
and sugary sweet revenge
and the children that we abandoned
they'll support us in our old age
toss another coin

we've been on the verge
for five thousand years at least
we've established our dominion over
every living thing with one exception
that would be the inner beast
we've left our homelands far behind
now they're below the oceans deep
we catch glimpses of the future
but only in our sleep

toss another coin toss another coin...

we move in circles we move in zigzags
or all too often in straight lines
we commit all manner of misdemeanor
when we're caught we usually pay the little fines
we either try to save the whales or try to
blow each other up
all depending upon our current mood
but after all these many million years
of what's called evolution
we're still just mostly sniffing around for food

toss another coin toss another coin...

there's a road leads out of here
i suppose we'll travel on
but there's that voice that voice
keeps telling us we're already long long gone
out of ignorance and fear
we will surely fly when we grow wings
we'll feast upon the precious stones
that the mighty asteroid brings

toss another coin toss another coin...
